Charlottesville, Va. (AP) – Virginia, led by Elton Brown’s 24 points, pushed past pesky Appalachian State 77-60 Wednesday night at University Hall.

The Cavaliers (3-0) were tied with the Mountaineers (1-1) at 30 at halftime.

The Cavaliers, sparked by Brown, made eight of their first 14 shots of the second half to take a 48-33 lead with 12:49 to play. Brown, who also had 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the young season, scored eight of Virginia’s 18 points during the decisive spurt.

J.R. Reynolds added 16 points for the Cavaliers.

Noah Brown paced Appalachian State with 17 points.

Virginia pushed the lead to as many as 20 on four occasions in the second half.

In the first half, the Cavaliers shot just 31 percent. They missed 20 of their first 25 shots and committed nine turnovers.

The Mountaineers, who shot 39.3 percent before intermission, held a 30-28 advantage in the final minute before a Brown layup just before the buzzer tied it at 30.
