Dec. 21, 2004
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team won its third straight game with a 84-50 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday at University Hall.
UVa improved 7-3 overall, while the Red Flash fell to 2-6.
In the first half, the Cavaliers bolted out to 12-2 advantage. Sophomore Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) nailed three treys in the opening four minutes of action. SFU came within four points, 18-14, but that’s as close as it would get. UVA closed out the stanza with a 14-4 run and took a 20-point lead into the locker room, 50-30.
“We had a nice (offensive) punch at the end of the first half,” UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “It was crucial to get ahead by 20 points and put the game out of reach. It was good to see the team with a hungry attitude.”
In the second half, UVa continued to build upon its lead, holding St. Francis to just 20 points in the half.
Senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) led five Cavaliers in double-digit scoring with 18 points. McGuire finished with a career-high 16 points, including tying her career high with five treys. Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend’s (Cheverly, Md.) added 11 points, while sophomore Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) came off the bench for a season-high 11 points. Freshman Takisha Granberry (Charlotte, N.C.) added a season-high 10 points.
SFU’s Beth Swink netted a game-high 27 points. Christin Black added 14 points.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded SFU, 33-28. UVa forced 31 turnovers while committing 14. The 34-point win is UVa’s biggest since a 35-point win over Radford last season (70-35, Jan. 7, 2004).
