CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team lost its second straight game with a 76-56 decision to No. 8/6 North Carolina on Monday night at University Hall.

UVa fell to 16-7 overall and 5-4 in ACC play, while the Tar Heels improved to 19-3 overall and 7-2 in the league.

“I really feel like we’re a lot better than we played in the second half,” said head coach Debbie Ryan. “The doors came off. We just didn’t execute. We were a nightmare in the post.”

In the first half, UNC only led once, 3-2, then the Cavaliers went on a 13-0 run to go ahead by 12 points, 15-3. The Tar Heels went on their own run, 9-2 to tie the game at 27-27 with 44 seconds to go. UVa held a two-point edge at halftime, 29-27.

“In the first half, we attacked better,” Ryan said.

“Virginia played very well in the first half,” said UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell. “They beat us on the boards. That was our emphasis for the second half.”

In the second half, Virginia re-built its lead to six, 39-33, but UNC utilized a 16-0 run to go ahead for good. The Tar Heels led by as many as 21 points.

“In the second half, we tried to force it too much.” Ryan added. “That’s what hurt us.”

Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly, Md.) paced the Cavaliers with 13 points. Freshman Takisha Granberry (Charlotte, N.C.) came off the bench for 11 points, including two treys. Senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) added 10 points.

“We did get good looks, but we just didn’t finish like we should have,” Logan-Friend said.

Sophomore Ivory Latta led UNC with 22 points, including 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Sophomore Camille Little added 17 points, while freshman Erlana Larkins had 13 points.

UNC out-rebounded Virginia, 41-31.

Virginia hosts ACC newcomer Miami on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in University Hall.
