Virginia Finishes Third at Papa John's Collegiate

MIAMI, Fla. – The Virginia women’s golf team captured its best tournament finish in its two-year history with a third-place showing at the Papa John’s Collegiate on Tuesday.
Host Miami claimed the team title from the field of 12 with a 883 (+19). East Carolina, which shot the day’s best round of 294, moved into second with a 902 (+38). The Cavaliers shot a 305 (+15) in the final round, finishing with a 907 (+43). South Florida followed by two strokes with a 909 (+45).
Miami’s Josie Shinn shot a tournament low five-under 67 in the final round to bolt to medalist honors with a three-under 213. Mississippi State’s Beth Irwin finished second with a 220 (+4), while four players, including Virginia sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.), tied for third with a 221 (+5).
For the first time in school history, all five Cavalier golfers recorded Top 30 finishes in tournament action. Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) tied for 17th with a 228 (+12), while sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) tied for 21st with a 230 (+14). Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) tied for 24th with a 232 (+16), and freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) tied for 28th with a 234 (+18).
Virginia returns to action on March 4-6 at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
