Virginia Moves into Fifth at Lady Gamecock Classic

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team moved up to fifth place after the second round of competition at the Lady Gamecock Classic on Saturday.
Thirteenth-ranked New Mexico continues to lead the field of 12 teams with a 621 (+45), while No. 14 Louisiana State follows by four strokes with a 625 (+49). Host South Carolina is third with a 628 (+52). Furman is fourth with a 629 (+53). The Cavaliers, who along with Furman, shot the low round of the day with a 311 to stand fifth with a 631 (+55).
South Carolina freshman Caroline Rominger and New Mexico’s Kailin Downs are tied for first with a 148 (+4) each. Furman’s Jenny Suh is third with a 149 (+5), while three players, including UVa sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.,) are tied for fourth with a 155 (+11) each.
Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) is tied for 11th with a 158 (+14). Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is tied for 17th with a 160 (+16), while sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) follows by a stroke with a 161 (+17). Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) rounded out the Cavaliers’ scoring with a 168 (+24).
The final round at the Lady Gamecock Classic tees off on Sunday, March 13 at the University Club.
