CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 29 Virginia women’s golf team stands fourth after the first round of competition at the 17th Annual ACC Championship on Friday.

Top-ranked and defending champion Duke leads the field of eight squads with a 303 (+15). The No. 15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons are second with a 312 (+24), while ACC newcomer Miami is third with a 319 (+31). Competing in just their second ACC Championship, the Cavaliers follow by one stroke with a 320 (+32). The No. 27 NC State Wolfpack is fifth with a 323 (+35).

“The conditions were tough,” UVa head coach Jan Mann said of the windy weather. “But the team hung in there. We’re excited to play tomorrow. We’re taking it one shot at a time, one day at a time. They’re playing well.”

Wake Forest’s Mandy Goins is top individual after the first 18 holes of action with a 73 (+1). Duke’s Anna Grzebien follows by one stroke with a 74 (+2), while teammate Brittany Land is third with a 75 (+3). Three players are tied for fourth, including UVa sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.), with a 76 (+4) each.

Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) is tied for 12th with an 80 (+8), while sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) is tied for 17th with an 81 (+9). Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) is tied for 25th with an 83 (+11), and sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) rounded out the Cavaliers’ scoring with an 85 (+13).

Second round action of the 2005 ACC Championship tees off on Saturday, April 16 at 8 a.m. at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
