CARY, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team concluded their season Thursday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to No. 36 Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament at the Cary Tennis Center. The Cavaliers rallied in singles to win three matches, but couldn’t overcome the Seminoles winning the doubles point.

The Cavaliers (6-15) recorded a big upset in doubles as Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) topped the No. 12 ranked team of Mihaela Moldovan and Lindsay Deason 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. However, the Seminoles rallied to win at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the point, including the deciding match at No. 2 in a tiebreaker.

That doubles point ended up being significant as the teams split the six singles matches. Florida State won at No. 3 singles to take a 2-0 lead before Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) cut that lead in half with her 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Roxanne Clarke at No. 2 singles. After Florida State won at No. 1 singles to take a 3-1 lead, Virginia then needed to win the three matches remaining. The Cavaliers got two of those wins as Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) won in three sets over Natalie Tirapelli at No. 6 singles and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Tapiwa Mirobela in three sets at No. 4 singles. With the match on the line, Amberly Tantee held off Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) for a three set win at No. 5 singles to clinch the win for Florida State.

The Seminoles advance to play top seeded Georgia Tech in Friday’s semifinal round.
