The 5th annual Mac McDonald Invitational raised a record $104,000 for the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital this past Monday, surpassing the goal that was set earlier in the year.

McDonald, the Cavaliers’ play by play radio voice, said the dollar figure represents a true committment to the hospital.

“I am overwhelmed. I never felt this tournament, and this cause would grow so quickly. The fact we reached the $100,000 plateau in five years is absolutely incredible. We have a lot of wonderful corporate sponsors and volunteers who work diligently to support our mission,” McDonald said.

In conjunction with the event, the UVA Children’s Hospital selected cancer survivor, 14 year old Daniel Puckette as the “Comeback Kid of the Year”. Puckette, from Forest, Virginia, was honored Sunday night at a special dinner and was presented the award as well as a Cavalier #8 football jersey by head coach Al Groh.

“Daniel is a remarkable young man,” Groh said. “He provides inspiration for all of us.”
