CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team opened its 2005 preseason schedule with a 2-1 win over VCU Saturday night in front of 957 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers rallied from a halftime deficit with two second half goals to win the match between two preseason top 15 teams.

The game started 38 minutes late after a thunderstorm rolled through the Charlottesville area during warm-ups. After the delay, the No. 11 ranked Rams struck first, as Ebo Stephens one-timed a cross from Dominic Oduro into the net in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. VCU held that lead into halftime. In the second half, the No. 6 ranked Cavaliers drew even in the 55th minute. Dane Murphy (Redding, Conn.) set up first-year forward Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany), who blasted a shot from the top of the penalty area into the upper right corner of the goal. In the 70th minute, the Cavaliers took the lead when first-year midfielder Milovan Milosevic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro) took a free kick from 30-yards and fired it into the far side of the net.

Overall, Virginia outshot VCU 11-10 in the contest, while VCU held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) and Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) each made one save in goal for Virginia, while Rob Szymanik made one for VCU.

“It was a good opportunity for us to get a look at all of our players in game action tonight,” said Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch. “I was happy to get the result and was pleased with our response in the second half. I think we definitely have a lot of good young players on our team and that especially showed in the second half. Those young players are going to push our veterans for spots on the field.”

Virginia concludes their preseason schedule on Wednesday, August 24 when they host American at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, August 21, the Cavalier men’s and women’s soccer teams will have Meet the Team Day at the Barracks Road Shopping Center from 1-3 p.m.
