CLAREMONT, Calif. – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team opened their 2005 fall season by competing in the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic on the USTA Futures Circuit. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) each won in Friday’s first round of the qualifying draw.

Devvarman, who enters the fall ranked No. 12 in the ITA collegiate rankings, defeated Mandondo Ivy 6-3, 6-0 in his first round match. In the Saturday’s second round, Devvarman will meet K.C. Corkery, a senior at Stanford and currently ranked No. 9 in the ITA collegiate rankings.

Miklo distpatched Robbye Poole, the No. 9 seed, 6-2, 6-2 in his first round match. Miklo, ranked No. 61 in the preseason ITA rankings, will meet Chris Guido in the second round Saturday.

“We are excited to get the fall season started,” said assistant coach Tony Bresky. “Both guys played well today. This a good tournament for Somdev and Marko since the competition is usually very strong.”
