Virginia Opens with Win at George Washington, 66-53

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team rolled to a 66-53 win over George Washington on Friday at the Charles E. Smith Center.
“Our team was very ready to play,” said coach Debbie Ryan.
In the first half, Virginia jumped out a 5-0 lead. The Colonials then went on a 6-0 run to come within one, 11-10. UVa never let GW lead and pulled ahead by 13 at the break, 36-23.
In the second half, UVa continued to pull ahead by as many as 22 points, 51-29. GW fought back, coming within 13 at the end.
Senior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) paced the Cavaliers with her first career double-double of 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Takisha Granberry (Charlotte, N.C.) added 14 points and eight boards, while junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) had 13 points. Sophomore Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) chipped in 11 points and and a career-high eight assists.
“Tiffany was just a beast out there,” Ryan added. “She controlled us offensively and defensively. She helped the younger player and provided great leadership.”
For the Colonials, Kimberly Beck led with 13 points, and Sarah-Jo Lawrence added 10.
Overall, UVa out-rebounded GW, 43-34. The Cavaliers shot 41 percent from the field and 78 percent from the line.
Virginia returns to University Hall on Sunday, Nov. 20 for its home opener with WrightState at 2 p.m.
