UVa Wrestlers Place Second at Keystone Classic

Philadelphia, Pa. – – Seven University of Virginia wrestlers finished in the top three in their weight classes as the Cavaliers placed second in the team standings at the Keystone Classic hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon. Sophomores Nick Smith and Anthony Burke led the Cavaliers each finishing second in their weight classes. Eric Albright, Damian Johnson, Mike Grogan, Brent Jones and Kyle Narkiewicz all placed third in their respective weight classes.

Virginia scored 109.5 team points earning the second place finish. Penn. scored 151.0 points on the day. American was third with 100.5 points. Appalachian State and Boston University finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with 79.5 and 76.5 points. The Cavaliers had six pins in the tournaments.

Burke and Smith highlighted the day for the Cavaliers. Smith defeated Brown’s Levon Mock, 5-2, before holding off Brown’s James Connors, 2-0. Smith won by medical forfeit to advance to the championship match. He fell to Adam LoPiccolo of American University.

Burke advanced to the championship match at 125. He earned a decision over Boston University’s Brian Matsumra, 5-0, and pinned Wagner’s Joe Eurell at 3:06. Burke earned the decision over Rider’s Ryan Smith, 9-4, to advance to the championship round.

Albright placed third at 133. After falling in his first match in the winner’s bracket, he bounced back for five consecutive wins. Albright pinned Appalachian State’s Jordan Lipp at 3:35. Albright earned a major decision over Brown’s John Triggas, 11-0, in the consolation championship.

Johnson won his first two matches at 165 pounds. He fell to App. State’s Lee Roper, 3-1, before pinning Penn’s Colin Hitschler at 6:58 and Boston University’s Zak Johns at 7:07. Grogan went 5-1 at 174 pounds. He won his first match before falling in the next round. He wrapped up the meet with four straight wins which included pinning Duke’s Turner Rooney at 5:46 and App. State’s Neal Martin at 6:23 in the consolation championship.

Narkiewicz went 3-1 at 184 pounds. He defeated Duke’s Dan Tulley, 8-5, and registered a 9-3 decision over Penn’s Neil Cisper to take third. Jones continued his impressive freshman campaign. After losing his opening round match, Jones bounced back to win three straight at 197 pounds. He pinned Duke’s Patrick Keenum at 1:03, before winning by medical forfeit. Jones pinned Brown’s Leo Saniuk at 1:48. Saniuk had defeated Jones in his first round match.

Virginia returns to action Dec. 2-4. The Cavaliers will travel to the Las Vegas Invitational, Dec. 2-3, and the Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 4.
