CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After leading by as many as 10 points late in the game, the University of Virginia women’s basketball team squeaked out a 54-48 win over Harvard on Saturday night at University Hall.

The Cavaliers improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Crimson fell to 2-3.

In the first half, Virginia jumped out a 5-0 lead to start the contest. Harvard came back to close the gap to one, 10-9. UVa then pulled ahead and led by nine at intermission, 31-22.

“We’re a much better team than we (showed) tonight,” head coach Debbie Ryan said. “You have to give Harvard a lot of credit. It was a two-possession game, and anyone could’ve won.”

In the second half, Harvard opened with a 10-4 run to come within three, 35-32. The Cavaliers continued to rebuild their lead, going up by 10 points, 43-33, with 9:40 left to play. However, Harvard did not give up. With 4:55 on the clock, the Crimson tied the game at 46-46. Virginia closed out the game with a 8-2 run, sparked by two jumpers from sophomore reserve Denesha Kenion (Oxon, Md.), to win the game.

`I can’t say enough about Denesha,” Ryan added. “She’s been a contributor in every game. She really does bring energy to us from off the bench.”

Junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) paced the Cavaliers with a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) added 10 points. Junior Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) and Kenion finished with eight points each.

Maureen McCaffery led Harvard with 13 points. Adrian Budischak came off the bench for 10 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Harvard, 34-28.

Virginia travels to Seton Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 7 for a 7 p.m. game. UVa then takes an 11-day break for final exams before visiting Richmond on Sunday, Dec. 18.
