Cohen and Rizza Win N.C.T.C. Doubles Title

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The Cavalier doubles team of Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) won the doubles championship of the 2006 National Collegiate Tennis Classic, dubbed the “Wimbledon of College Tennis”, Sunday afternoon at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The title is the second tournament title of the season for the duo, as they also won the ITA East Regional. They also become the second consecutive Cavalier duo to win the title, joining Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va,), the 2005 Doubles Champions.
Rizza and Cohen, ranked No. 19 nationally, were the tournament’s No. 1 seed and reached the final by downing a pair of teammate teams in Jarrett Chirico and Doug Stewart in the quarterfinals and Huey and Eric Riley in the semifinals. In the championship match, the Cavalier duo downed Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Phillip Gruendler of UCLA, 9-7.
In singles play, Devvarman reached the semifinals. Two other Cavaliers, Rizza and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia), also reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw.
The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 in the preseason ITA rankings, will open the dual match season on Tuesday as they visit No. 9 Pepperdine. Virginia will close out their west coast trip on Wednesday when they visit No. 20 USC.
