CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team concluded play Monday at the 2006 Virginia Women’s Tennis Invitational at the Virginia Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Over the three day tournament, the Cavaliers took six of nine doubles matches and 10 of 18 singles matches from three teams ranked in the top 45 nationally.

The Cavaliers opened play on Monday by winning two of three doubles matches for the third straight day, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 against Purdue. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) won for the third time at No. 3, topping Brittany Minna and Anna Dzeva 8-2. After the Boilermakers had won at No. 2, the Cavalier duo of Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) rallied from 7-3 down to win 9-7 over Hala Sufi and Mallory Voelker at No. 1.

In the afternoon, the Cavaliers played Wisconsin in singles and took four of the six matches from the Badgers. James won her third singles match of the weekend, topping Kaylan Caiati 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Stern recorded a straight set win, 7-5, 6-4, over Elizabeth Carpenter at No. 4. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) also completed a perfect 3-0 singles record in the event, downing Erin Jobe 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won her match at No. 6, defeating Lexi Goldin 6-1, 6-1.

“This weekend, we essentially won three matches in three days against three very good, NCAA Tournament caliber teams,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “Today we had a great overall effort from the entire program. We are learning how to use hard work, the right game plan, some in-game adjustments, and win matches when things aren’t going our way. In doubles today, Purdue outplayed us, but we kept fighting to win the point. We keep making progress and I am excited for our first dual match on the 27th.”

The Cavaliers open their 2006 dual match schedule on January 27 when they host Richmond. Game time at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at Boar’s Head is 5:00 p.m.
