Ohio State Holds Off Virginia Wrestling, 28-10

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Freshman Brent Jones earned the only fall of the meet and sophomore Anthony Burke added a major decision victory, but Ohio State won eight of the 10 bouts to defeat the Virginia Wrestling Team, 28-10, Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers fell to 5-4 on the season while Ohio State moved to 4-6.
At 197 pounds, Jones pinned Ohio State’s Corey Morrison at 1:57 in the first period to give the Cavaliers their second win of the day.
Burke at 125 pounds earned a 14-2 major decison over the Buckeyes’ Nathan Costello. Burke scored seven first period points including three points on a near fall giving Virginia a 4-0 lead.
Ohio State then rallied to win the next seven matches. T.J. Enright earned a 13-5 major decision over UVa’s Peter Ferrara at 141 pounds.
Virginia and Ohio State had two close matches at 174 pounds and 184 pounds.Blake Maurer led Mike Grogan 4-2 after the first period. Grogan battled back to pull within 4-3 after earning a point on an escape, but Maurer held on for the 4-3 win at 174 pounds.
At 184 pounds, Alex Picazo went up 2-1 after takedown in the first period on Kyle Narkiewicz. Narkiewicz rallied to tie the match, 2-2, in the second period before Picazo earned a point on an escape to claim a 3-2 win.
Virginia returns to action next weekend when the Cavaliers host North Carolina and Virginia Tech Friday night and Saturday night. Both meets are set to begin at 7 p.m.
