Cavalier Women's Tennis Wins Season Opener Over Richmond

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 6-1 win over Richmond Friday night at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The match marked the team’s first dual match in the indoor home of Virginia tennis.

The Cavaliers (1-0) opened the match strong, taking two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) downed Jessica Hubbard and Pamela Duran 8-2 at No. 2 doubles before Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Beatrice Grasu and Meghan Wolfgram at No. 1.

In singles, the Cavaliers won the first five matches off the court to extend their lead to 6-0 before the Spiders (0-3) captured the final match. DelPriore made the score 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Wolfgram at No. 3. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hubbard at No. 5. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) clinched the dual match as she completed a 6-1, 7-6 win over Ashlee Vosters at No. 6. At No. 2, James defeated Duran, ranked No. 74 nationally, in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. Wink got the final win of the night for the Cavaliers, as she rallied for a three set win, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 over Grasu at No. 1.

“We are really happy for the kids and were impressed with their level of play today,” said Mark Guilbeau, who won his first dual match as head coach of the Cavaliers. “Richmond is a solid squad and we had to play well to beat them. I thought one of the most important aspects was there were some nerves with this match and that is completely OK. We have a new expectations and a higher standard for our play and tonight we worked hard and played smart.”

The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, when they host a doubleheader at the Indoor Tennis Stadium. At 11:00 a.m. Virginia will host Princeton before playing Old Dominion at 5:00 p.m.
