Cavalier Wrestling Wins Third Straight, Edge ODU, 19-17

NORFOLK, Va. – – Nick Alparone posted the only fall and Eric Albright had his third straight major decision as Virginia edged Old Dominion, 19-17, Friday evening at the ODU Fieldhouse. The Cavaliers (8-4) won their third straight dual meet while Old Dominion fell to 7-6-1.
At 141 pounds, Alparone pinned BJ Compton at 1:51. Albright knocked off Ryan Williams, 12-2, at 133 pounds. He has outscored his opponents, 35-7, in his last three matches.
Nick Smith gave the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead when he defeated John Dolida, 4-1, in the heavyweight battle. The Monarchs tied the meet when Bryan LaShomb knocked off Anthony Burke at 125 pounds, 9-5. Virginia won the next three bouts when Alparone and Albright posted their wins.
Drew DiPasquale then earned a 5-1 decision over Jeff Becker at 149 pounds putting UVa ahead, 16-3. Old Dominion rallied winning the next three bouts as Nick Pullano had a 10-2 major decision over Kyle Artusio at 157 pounds, pulling ODU within, 16-7. Robby Gosnell then edged Damian Johnson, 3-2, to make it 16-10. ODU got within, 16-13 when TJ Hansen defeated Mike Grogan 4-2, at 174 pounds.
Kyle Narkiewicz defeated David Mendoza, 5-2, at 184 pounds to put the Cavaliers ahead, 19-13.
Adam Wright, ranked 18th nationally at 197 pounds, earned a 20-9 major decision over Brent Jones in the final bout, but UVa held on for the 19-17 win.
Virginia returns to action Sunday afternoon when the Cavaliers host a tri-meet with Ohio and James Madison. Ohio and James Madison will wrestle at noon while UVa will wrestle Ohio at 1:30 p.m. The Cavaliers and the Dukes will wrap up the tri-meet at 3:30 p.m.
