Cavaliers Win Titles at Liberty Bash

Virginia’s men’s 4x800m team won the title at the Liberty Bash, held on Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Tolsma Center at Liberty University. The Cavalier quartet ran 8:00.54 to take home top honors, leading a strong Virginia contingent over the weekend in Lynchburg. Robert Assibey also took home a gold medal as he won the long jump with a leap of 21′ 11.75″. He also finished third in the triple jump with his 43′ 8″. UVa’s Meggie Schuelke opened up her 2006 season with a high jump of 5′ 7.25″, a season-best for the team and a top-three mark in the ACC.
Other Cavaliers also placed at the meet, as Alexa Manning was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 43′ 10″. She also finished fifth in the weight throw with her 47′ 3″. Katie Tershel took home a pair of third place finishes as she had a long jump of 18′ 2.25″ and a triple jump of 37′ .5″. Stephen Thompson and Jeff McClurg went 2-4 in the pole vault as both men hit season-best marks; Thompson jumped 14′ 11.25″ while McClurg vaulted 14′ 5.25″. Yemi Ayeni was fifth in the shot put with his 47′ 2.5″ while Markevus Collins finished eighth in the 35# weight, throwing a 39′ 8.75″.
The men’s distance squad fared well also, as Sam Fletcher was fifth in the mile with his 4:20.98. He finished just seconds in front of teammate Matt Gutridge, who was eighth in 4:22.64. Matt Gambale finished fourth in the 5K, running 15:37.04.
