Cavalier Women's Tennis Stays Undefeated With Victory Over Penn State

PHILADELPHIA – The Virginia women’s tennis team remained undefeated on the season as they topped Penn State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the University of Pennsylvania. The win was the second consecutive shutout for the Cavaliers, who have only dropped two points in four matches this season.
The Cavaliers (4-0) took the early 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) scored an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Andreea Niculescu and Katelyn BeVard. Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles over Jenny Shular and Leyla Morzan.
In singles, the clinched the dual match win with three straight set wins. James topped Niculescu 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) defeated BeVard 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Rales won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles over Dorothy Dohanics. Stern captured a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Lauren Holzberg at No. 4 singles. In the final two matches, the Cavaliers overcame match points against to rally for victory. At No. 1 singles, Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) trailed Sasha Abraham 6-1, 5-2 before rallying for a 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. At No. 5 singles, Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) fought off six match points against in a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (15-13) win over Shular.
“Ultimately, I was proud of our effort today, especially at the end of the match,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “However, we must start matches with more energy and greater effort if we want to continue to have good results as the season progresses.”
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, when they play at No. 56 Penn. The Quakers will be the first ranked team Virginia has played this season. The match will begin at 10:00 a.m.
