CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team recorded its first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 64 Marshall 4-3 Wednesday at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers improve to 6-1 on the season, as they have already matched their win total from last season.
The Thundering Herd (8-2) took an early lead in the match by taking the doubles point. Marshall got wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the opening point. Doubles play concluded as the Cavaliers duo of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) downed the No. 26 ranked team of Karolina Soor and Shannon Brown, 8-4, at the No. 2 position.
In singles, the Cavaliers rallied to tie the match when Stern defeated Soor 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. After Marshall retook the lead, 2-1, with a win at No. 1 singles, Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) drew the Cavaliers even again with her straight set win over Brown at No. 3 singles. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) gave Virginia its first lead when she completed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jessica Keener at No. 5 singles. Minutes later, James clinched the dual match win with her 6-0, 7-6 win over Kellie Schmitt at No. 2 singles. Marshall won the final match on the courts at the No. 6 position to make the final score 4-3.
“I am happy for the team that they were able to get another hard fought win,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “After the doubles point, we were able to stay positive and increased our energy and focus, which was necessary to get a win. I have a lot of respect for Marshall. They are doing an incredible job with a young program and are continually making improvement. Today, they made us play our best in order to get a victory.”
The Cavaliers continue their three match homestand with a pair of matches this weekend as a pair of top 25 opponents visit. On Saturday, the Cavaliers host No. 25 VCU at noon. On Sunday, they host No. 19 William & Mary at 2:00 p.m.
