Cavaliers One-Hit Saint Joseph's in 15-1 Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson no-hit Saint Joseph’s through six innings to earn his fourth win of the season and Brandon Guyer finished 3-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI as Virginia knocked off the Hawks, 15-1, to claim its second win of the three-game series at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium Saturday evening. Freshman shortstop Greg Miclat added a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while Sean Doolittle went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI for the Cavaliers who finished with 16 hits.
“We had another good offensive day at the plate. When you have a game like yesterday’s game, it’s very easy to have a letdown in that second game of the series. Our guys stayed aggressive at the plate and drove in runs,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “Jacob (Thompson) has been very solid for us on the mound and he’s getting the experience he needs as we head into ACC play next weekend.”
Thompson, Pat McAnaney, Nick Cruit and Andrew Carraway combined for the one-hitter for the Cavaliers. It was the first time a one-hitter has been thrown by any UVa pitchers under O’Connor. The Cavaliers had a two-hitter last season against NC State in a 2-0 UVa win and a two-hitter in a 17-1 win over Central Connecticut on Mar. 5, 2004. Thompson struck out five of the 20 batters he faced. McAnaney and Carraway each tossed a scoreless inning while Cruit allowed one hit in one inning of work and recorded a strikeout in his first appearance of the season. Tim Henry went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while David Adams was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Don Werner (0-2) suffered the loss for Saint Joseph’s as he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits.
Virginia quickly took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Mitchell doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Doolittle’s single through the right side. Guyer hit his first double of the game down the left field line to score Doolittle and Adams. He later scored when Mike Campagna hit into a fielder’s choice giving the Hoos the four-run lead.
Saint Joseph’s scored their first run of the series in the top of the second. After Mike Gentile was hit by a pitch and Dustin Onulak walked, Gentile scored on a throwing error by Adams at second base pulling the Hawks within, 4-1.
The Cavaliers then scored 11 unanswered runs. UVa scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to go ahead, 10-1. Mitchell hit into a fielder’s choice to score Beau Seabury with the bases loaded. A bad throw to second base by the catcher allowed Campagna to score to make it, 6-0. Doolittle then doubled in two more runs and Adams tripled in Doolittle as UVa led, 9-1. Guyer’s second double of the game scored Adams for the nine-run lead.
Miclat’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hoos’ an 11-1 lead. Guyer’s third double of the game scored Henry for a 12-1 advantage in the bottom of the seventh. Virginia tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Henry’s ground out scored Campagna and John Scaglione’s pinch-hit single scored two more runs to make for the final 15-1 score.
Chris Hildreth had the Hawk’s lone hit when he singled to center field in the top of the eighth with one out. Hildreth finished 1-for-3 at the plate for Saint Joseph’s.
Virginia and Saint Joseph’s will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m.
