Cavaliers Sweep Doubleheader from UMES, 20-3, 15-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Brandon Guyer hit an inside-the-park home run on his way to a 3-for-4, six RBI performance in game one and Brandon Marsh went 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Josh Myers struck out four in three innings in game two as Virginia swept a doubleheader from Maryland Eastern Shore, 20-3, and 15-0, Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (14-2) scored 20 runs on 21 hits in the first game and used a six-run sixth inning to end the game after seven innings in game two.
“We were able to pick up where we left off from this weekend. I know we’ve scored a lot of runs the past couple of games, but I’ve like our guys offensive approach,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “We’ve had 13 straight games where we’ve had at least 10 hits and our pitchers have pitched well, which has allowed our hitters to thrive lately. Our guys are confident right now. Hopefully, we take that into this weekend on the road against a very good Georgia Tech team.”
Guyer was one of three Cavaliers to finish with three hits in game one. Mike Mitchell was 3-for-5 with four runs scored adding to his team-lead of 24 runs scored. David Adams went 3-for-4 with one RBI while Greg Miclat finished 3-for-3 with one RBI. Tim Henry and Tom Hagan each added a pair of hits with Hagan driving in three and Henry adding two RBIs.
Virginia wasted no time scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Guyer doubled to left center to clear the bases and give the Hoos a 3-0 lead. Beau Seabury followed with an RBI single to make it, 4-0. Maryland Eastern Shore pulled within 4-3 in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Morgan Schirmer singled to right center to score two runs. Brad Powell followed with a squeeze bunt for another run as UMES only trailed, 4-3. But, UVa scored 16 unanswered runs over the next six innings.
The Cavaliers put up three more runs in the bottom of the second as Adams hit a run-scoring single and Mike Campagna was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Miclat singled to left field to plate Hagan for the 7-0 UVa lead.
A bases loaded walk by Hagan put the Hoos ahead, 8-0, in the bottom of the third. After an RBI single from Mitchell and a sacrifice fly from Henry extended it to 10-0, Guyer delivered his inside-the park home run when he drove one deep in the gap in right center with two outs for a 13-3 lead in the fourth.
Virginia scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead, 17-3. John Scaglione’s two-run single down the left field line highlighted a three-run sixth giving the Hoos the 20-3 advantage.
Robert Poutier (1-0) earned his first win of the season as he pitched four innings allowing three runs on four hits. He walked three and recorded two strikeouts. Pat McAnaney struck out three in two innings of relief and Nick Cruit tossed one scoreless inning.
Kevin Millenburg took the loss for the Hawks as he allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked four. Schirmer led UMES at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Virginia 15, Maryland Eastern Shore 0 (Game 2)
Myers, Michael Schwimer, Shooter Hunt, Allie Swanson, Alex Smith and Andrew Carraway combined for the three-hit shutout and the Cavaliers posted 15 runs on 14 hits behind Marsh’s 4-for-4, three RBI performance in the 15-0 win in game two.
Guyer, Adams and Ryan Hudson each had two hits and two RBIs. Hagan also added two RBI. Myers (1-1) struck out four in three innings for his first win of the season. Mike Roberts (0-2) suffered the loss for the Hawks allowing eight runs on seven hits and walking five.
Marsh’s RBI triple gave UVa the early 1-0 lead after Mitchell walked to lead off the game. Guyer grounded out to bring Marsh in and Hudson’s single through the right side scored Adams for the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Mitchell doubled in Miclat in the bottom of the second to start a four-run inning. Doolittle followed with an infield RBI single and Guyer’s seventh double of the season scored Marsh. Adam’s sacrifice fly brought in the final run of the inning as UVa led, 7-0. Marsh’s second RBI of the game gave UVa an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Hudson made it 9-0 when he singled to left field to bring in Guyer in the fourth.
Hagan’s two-run single sparked a six-run, five hit inning in the sixth as the Cavaliers completed their second shutout in the last four games.
Eric Gaines, Greg Cathell and Justin Hoban each had one hit for the Hawks who fell to 3-11-1 on the season.
Virginia now heads to Atlanta, Ga., to open Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend at No. 1 Georgia Tech. Friday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. while first-pitch Saturday and Sunday is 1 p.m.
