CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Brandon Marsh picked up his third four-hit game of the season and Pat McAnaney ran his record to 4-1 as No. 14 Virginia concluded its 10-game home-stand with a 13-2 win over Norfolk State Wednesday evening. Sean Doolittle and Jeremy Farrell each had three hits for the Cavaliers, who improved to 24-5 on the season and pounded out 18 hits in the game. Norfolk State fell to 11-15 on the season.

“That was a nice way to wrap up this home-stand. Our guys had another good hitting night and it was nice to get into a rhythm as we get ready to go on the road,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “We were able to use our depth and give some guys the evening off, which is a big help as we head to NC State for another tough ACC weekend.”

Doolittle finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Farrell was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Greg Miclat, Mike Campagna and David Adams all had two hits for UVa. Moriba George and Ernie Banks led Norfolk State as they both went 2-for-4.

McAnaney started the game and pitched three innings, holding the Spartans to one run on four hits. He struck out two. Shooter Hunt pitched three innings and had four strikeouts in relief while Alex Smith, Andrew Carraway and Michael Schwimer each pitched one scoreless inning. Luke Foss took the loss for the Spartans as he allowed six earned runs in two innings.

Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when Adams singled to left center to score Tim Henry, 1-1. The Cavaliers used a five-run second inning to build a 6-1 lead. Farrell drove in Tom Hagan and scored on Miclat’s RBI single as UVa led, 3-1. Miclat then scored on an error for a 4-1 lead. RBI singles from Doolittle and Marsh made it, 6-1. Farrell’s RBI single gave UVa a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Moriba George’s RBI single pulled Norfolk State within, 12-2, in the top of the fifth. After Virginia scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Cavaliers exploded with a four-run sixth inning. Brandon Guyer’s ground out scored one run and Beau Seabury was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for another run. Campagna’s two-run single gave the Hoos a 12-2 lead.

Virginia’s final run came when Campagna singled in John Scaglione in the eighth.

Norfolk State jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the first. T.J. Starkey doubled to lead off the game and came scored on an RBI double from Ernie Banks.

The Cavaliers hit the road this weekend then travel to No. 18 NC State for an Atlantic Coast Conference series. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
