CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 15th-ranked Virginia women’s rowing team will compete in the South/Central Region Championships this weekend on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Preliminary competition is scheduled for Saturday, May 13, followed by the finals on Sunday, May 14.

Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on both days. With 29 teams participating, heats in each event are slated for Saturday. The top four finishers advance to the afternoon semifinals.

Virginia crews will compete in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, open four, novice eight, and second novice eight events at the competition. The Cavaliers have not competed since winning their seventh consecutive ACC on April 22. UVa won all four events at the competition.

Virginia won the overall South/Central Championship and the South Region Championship last year. The Cavaliers won championships in the second varsity eight and the varsity four competitions. UVa crews also finished second in the first novice eight, third in the first varsity four and second novice eight, and fourth in the open four events.

In the South/Central regional rankings, UVa’s second varsity eight is ranked second, the varsity four is ranked third, the novice eight is ranked fourth, and the varsity eight is ranked fifth. In the South Region alone, all four Cavalier boats are ranked No. 1.

Virginia’s first varsity eight crew is currently ranked 15th nationally in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Seven other crews ranked in the poll are scheduled to compete in the South/Central Championships, including No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota, and No. 10 Notre Dame.
