CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – North Carolina’s Robert Woodard tossed a complete game six-hitter as the top-ranked Tar Heels shut out No. 9 Virginia, 5-0, to even the Atlantic Coast Conference series at Davenport Field in front of another record crowd of 2,624 fans. Virginia (40-11, 17-9 ACC) dropped only its third game at home while UNC improved to 41-10 and 19-7 in the ACC.

“We knew North Carolina was going to bounce back after last night’s game. Their pitcher threw a great game and we couldn’t get the clutch hits that we know we need to win this series,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “We’re just going to regroup and get ready for tomorrow’s finale.”

Jacob Thompson (9-2) held UNC to one run on six hits in seven innings, but suffered his second loss of the season. He had three strikeouts and walked four. David Adams led UVa going 2-for-4. Benji Johnson led the Tar Heels with a 3-for-5 performance. He had an RBI. Reid Fronk finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Josh Horton was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Woodard (6-1) tossed his third career complete game and registered his first career shutout. He had two strikeouts. He retired 15 straight batters before giving up a single in the ninth. Virginia was shut out for the first time since May 14, 2005 when Miami blanked the Cavs 1-0 at home.

North Carolina broke open a 1-0 game with a four-run ninth inning. Mike Cavasinni reached on an error which allowed Kyle Shelton to score from third to make it, 2-0. Fronk’s two-run double gave the Tar Heels a 4-0 lead. Horton’s RBI single scored Fronk to make it, 5-0, in favor of North Carolina.

Johnson’s RBI double in the top of the sixth put the Tar Heels ahead, 1-0. Horton scored after he led off the inning with a single to right field.

Virginia looked like it was going to score the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth. Adams’ led off with a single and moved to second on Brandon Guyer’s sacrifice bunt. Tom Hagan singled up the middle, but Shelton stopped the ball from rolling further into the outfield. He threw home and Adams’ was called out at the plate.

Virginia and North Carolina will wrap up its series Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior lefty Mike Ballard will start for the Cavaliers.
