Doolittle's 10th Win Lifts No. 6 Cavs Past Hokies, 4-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sean Doolittle registered his 10th win of the season while Casey Lambert earned his ninth save to lead No. 6 Virginia to a 4-2 win over Virginia Tech (20-31, 4-23 ACC) Friday night at Davenport Field in the Atlantic Coast Conference series opener. David Adams drove in two runs for the Cavaliers (43-11, 19-9 ACC) who won their school record 19th conference game. The 43 wins are also a regular season record for wins.
“We played fundamental baseball tonight,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “We didn’t have a lot of hits, but when we had runners in scoring position, we found a way to get them home. Sean (Doolittle) battled his way through some tough innings and Casey (Lambert) and Michael (Schwimer) came in to close the door. That’s what we’ve been doing and are going to have to do to continue to win close games.”
Doolittle (10-1) became only the third Cavalier in program history to win at least 10 games in a season. Seth Greisinger was the last UVa pitcher with a 10-win season when he won 12 games in 1996. Tim Burcham had 11 wins in 1985. Doolittle finished with six strikeouts giving up two runs on six hits. Michael Schwimer tossed two scoreless innings before giving way to Lambert in the ninth inning. Schwimer made his 32nd appearance, matching Matt Moore, for the single-season school record set in 1994.
Tom Hagan, Doolittle and Greg Miclat each had one hit for the Cavaliers. Nicky Bowers (3-7) took the loss for Virginia Tech as he allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits. He walked four and struck out two. Billy Marn led the Hokies going 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Warren Schaeffer was 2-for-4.
The Cavaliers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Adams’ two run single through the left side scored Miclat and Tim Henry for a 3-2 UVa lead. UVa added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Farrell was hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Patrick Wingfield stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Beau Seabury’s sacrifice fly scored Wingfield to make it, 4-2.
Billy Marn’s two-run double down the right field line scored both Sean O’Brien and Matt Hacker for a 2-0 Virginia Tech lead. Farrell’s sacrifice fly brought in Hagan, who hit a one-out triple to reach base, bringing the Cavs within, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
The game was the first of the final Adelphia Commonwealth Challenge event. UVa leads the challenge, 13.5-7.5.
Virginia and Virginia Tech continue their series Friday night at 7 p.m. Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson will start for the Cavaliers.
