Three Cavalier Baseball Players Earn All-ACC Academic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Three Virginia baseball players have been named to the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Baseball Team as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. Rising second-year Andrew Carraway (Marietta, Ga.), rising fourth-year Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) and 2006 graduate Tom Hagan (Roanoke, Va.) were named to the inaugural team.

Carraway went 2-0 with a 2.91 ERA on the mound for the Cavaliers in his first season. He made 19 appearances with one start and struck out 33 batters in 34 innings while walking only six. He contributed in three of Virginia’s nation’s best 10 shutouts.

Henry, a history major and three-year starter in the outfield, hit .318 for the Cavaliers while starting 47 of 56 games. He had 62 hits with 39 runs scored and 39 RBI in helping UVa to school records in hits (687) and RBI (416). He added 12 stolen bases.

Hagan earned a degree in systems engineering last May. The first-team All-ACC selection as a designated hitter/utility player finished second on the team hitting .357 with 75 hits. He had 41 runs scored and the fourth-most RBIs on the team with 41. He finished second in stolen bases (19-of-22) while ranking in the top 10 in the ACC in on-base percentage (.465). Hagan, one of four captains for the Cavaliers, was named to the Cosida District 3 All-Academic team. He finished his career hitting .324 with 81 runs, 158 hits, 91 RBI, 19 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 196 total bases and 32 stolen bases .He played in 156 games and started 136 games.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
