CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia volleyball players Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) and Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) were named to the 2006 Comcast Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament team. The Cavaliers finished the tournament, which was played August 25-26 at Stokely Athletic Center, with a 2-1 record.

Kirkwood, a third-year outside hitter, led UVa with 35 kills and 10 service aces and added 27 digs. She recorded double-doubles in UVa’s 3-0 wins over Miami (Ohio) and Centenary. Against Centenary, Kirkwood hit a career-high .706 with 12 kills on 17 attempts and no errors. She also had six service aces against the Ladies.

Oakes, a third-year middle, was the lone Cavalier to record double digits in kills in all three matches. She led Virginia with 10 kills in a 3-1 loss to 11th-ranked Tennessee. Oakes totaled 31 kills during 10 games and led all players in the tourney with 20 blocks (2.0 per game). She also led UVa with a .286 hitting percentage.

The Cavaliers return to action this weekend when they open the home portion of their schedule with the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament. UVa begins play in the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match against Georgetown Friday (Sept. 1) evening. Virginia plays Wright State and East Carolina on Saturday (Sept. 2) at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively. Admission is free of charge.
