Final Stats

For the second consecutive game, the Cavalier defense held their opponent to five shots in the contest as Virginia rallied to defeat Ohio 3-1 tonight (Sept 1) in Charlottesville. The Hoos (2-0) allowed the Bobcats (1-2) the first goal of the game and then scored the next three, holding Ohio to only one shot in the second half. Mia Link led Virginia with a goal and an assist, while Biffy Cornelison scored in her second consecutive game. Amy Desjadon made three saves in the first half before giving way to Katherine Blair, who held the Bobcats off the board in the second half.

The Cavaliers forced the action early, but it was Ohio who got on the board first as Estienne Coetzee stuck back the rebound of a Torrie Albini shot in the tenth minute. The Bobcats nearly doubled their lead five minutes later as they drew the first short corner of the match, but the shot was saved and the Cavalier defense cleared the ball.

At the other end of the field, left forward Lindsay O’Bannon got off a shot from the top of the circle that was saved, and the Cavaliers drew a long corner. They then lost the ball over the endline, giving the Bobcats a 16-yard hit. On the restart, Link, playing at center forward, picked up the errant pass and took it into the circle, drawing the keeper out before sending the ball over to O’Bannon, who scored in the 22nd minute to tie the game.

With time winding down in the half, center midfielder Lucy Meyers blocked up an Ohio pass from the backfield at the 25 and passed the ball up to Link, who penetrated the circle and flicked the ball over the Ohio keeper in the 35th minute, giving the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

Virginia drew the first short corner of the second half, but the direct shot was saved. The Bobcats made some runs downfield but they were unable to connect into the circle. In the 58th minute Liz Hiltz, who had come on to play left striker, collected a free hit in the circle and drew a short corner. On the play the direct shot was saved but Cornelison was there to bat the rebound into the cage for a 3-1 lead for the Cavaliers.

In the 66th minute the Bobcats drew a short and the lift on the shot was stopped by Blair, ending the Ohio scoring threat.

The Cavaliers held the Bobcats to just two short corners in the contest and outshot Ohio 15-5.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday as they host the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion. Game time at University Hall Turf Field is 1:00.
