Daytona Beach, FL – The 15th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 15-over 303 and stand sixth after the opening round of play at the 54-hole Fall Preview held at The Legends Course in Daytona Beach. The 18-team field for the Preview includes 15 teams ranked in Golfweek’s preseason top-25 poll.

The Cavaliers were led on the first day of play by senior Leah Wigger who shot 1-under 71 to tie for third place. Wigger was aided by an eagle on the par-5 second hole during a round that saw her par 14 holes.

UVa sophomore Jennie Arseneault shot 76 to stand 27th overall while Lauren Mielbrecht and Carly Truitt are in 48th place after posting identical 78s. Rachel Smith is one shot back in 58th position.

Georgia jumped out to an early lead at 1-over 289 led by four players finishing in the top eight. Auburn is second at 298, Tennessee is third at 299, Arizona State is fourth at 300 and Vanderbilt is one shot ahead of the Cavaliers in fifth place. Defending NCAA Champion Duke finished the first round in 11th place at 306.

Tennessee’s Nicole Smith has a three shot lead after starting with a 67. Vanderbilt’s Jacqui Concolio is second at 70 and Georgia’s Carolina Andrade and California’s Danielle Nash are tied with Wigger for third place.
