Virginia Volleyball Rallies For 3-1 Win Over Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia volleyball team dropped the first game against Boston College Thursday evening (Sept. 28), but rallied to win the next three games and post a 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 30-21, 30-24) Atlantic Coast Conference win over the Eagles at Power Gym. With the victory, the Cavaliers improve their winning streak to four matches and now stand at 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, while Boston College drops to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) helped lead Virginia to the victory with a team-high 18 kills. She also added 10 digs for her third career double-double. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) was the only other UVa player in double figures in kills as she tallied 10. Davis also added five blocks.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) notched a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Kirkwood also registered six blocks and four kills. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) and fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) both had nine kills on the night. Oakes also set a career-best with 10 blocks and raised ACC-best blocks per game average to 1.82. In addition to her nine kills, Osco contributed six digs, three blocks, three service aces and a pair of assists.
Fourth-year outside hitter Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station. Tenn.) and third-year defensive specialist Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) led five Cavaliers in double figures in digs with 16 apiece. Perilli also had three aces and three assists. Second-year libero Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 13 digs and a match-high four service aces.
Kelsey Johnson led Boston College with 24 kills and nine digs, while Dorota Niemczewska had 10 kills and 10 digs. Setter Brittany Pierpont handed out 44 assists and registered 12 digs. Allison Anderson posted a match-high 29 digs.
UVa hit .185 in the match with 54 kills, while the Eagles had five more kills (59), but hit only .120. The Cavaliers registered an impressive 17 team blocks in the match to Boston College’s seven. Virginia led in service aces 12-6, while the Eagles held an 83-77 edge in digs.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 30) when it travels to College Park, Md., for a 5:00 p.m. match against Maryland.
