The Virginia field hockey team scored late in the contest against No. 4 Duke and broke up the shutout, but the No. 10 Cavaliers (12-6) fell to the Blue Devils 3-1 today in Durham. Virginia’s Fenna Breitbarth converted a 1v1 chance past Caitlin Williams in the 68th minute, but the Cavaliers could not find the cage again. Katherine Blair made three saves to hold down the Blue Devil offense.

Duke got on the board in the 22nd minute as Liz Floyd converted a pass from Laura Suchoski. The Blue Devils added to their lead just before the break as Amy Stopford connected on a corner off assists from Brooke Patterson and Courtney Elliott . Duke took the 2-0 lead into the break. The Blue Devils made it 3-0 as Cara-Lyn Lopresti put back a rebound in the 44th minute.

The Cavalier defense stood strong, as Lauren Elstein and Lucy Meyers marshalled a backfield that allowed the Blue Devils only one more circle penetration in the final 18 minutes of play. Meyers continued to harass the Duke offense, creating turnovers and then starting opportunities for the Cavaliers across the midfield.

With time winding down, Katherine Bounds intercepted a pass in the backfield and led the ball up to Sara Confer. Confer in turn led Breitbarth, who attacked the circle on a 1v1. The first-year striker broke up the shutout as she found the cage in the 68th minute of play, beating Williams.

Virginia returns to action next Thursday (Nov. 2) in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament. The seeds are still to be determined, following the Wake Forest-Boston College game in Newton, Mass. on Sunday (Oct. 29).
