CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s head basketball coach Dave Leitao has announced the signing of 6-8 forward Mike Scott of Chesapeake, Va.

Scott averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots a game as a senior at Deep Creek High School during the 2005-06 season. He was a first-team all-state selection, and was the player of the year in the Southeastern District and the Eastern Region that season. He was also the most valuable player of the Southeastern District Tournament. Deep Creek finished the 2005-06 season with a record of 20-6 and won the Southeastern District Tournament.

Scott is currently attending Hargrave Military Academy.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is to be multi-dimensional and diverse as a team and with our players,” Leitao said. “Mike is somebody who fits that mold. He’s athletic and can play with his back to the basket. He has a really good touch and the ability to score in the post, which is something that we need. He can face up and has a developing skill package to make perimeter shots.

“Mike’s just a really good young man. I think he’ll accept learning and all the things that we’re doing here.”

Scott is the fourth player to sign with Virginia. Earlier, Leitao announced the signings of 6-4 guard Mustapha Farrakhan of Harvey, Ill., 6-4 guard Jeff Jones of Wilmington, Del., and 6-1 guard Sam Zeglinski of Philadelphia, Pa.
