CHARLOTTESVILLE – Ryan Pettinella, a junior center/forward on the Virginia men’s basketball team, sustained a left knee patella dislocation during the first half of Virginia’s 59-52 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 21. Pettinella will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Friday (Dec. 29) to remove some loose cartilage in the knee. He is expected to be out three to four weeks.

“Ryan will be missed while he is out with his knee injury,” Virginia head coach Dave Leitao said. “He has provided us with energy and solid play this season. We look forward to having him back in action.”

The 6-9 Pettinella played in each of Virginia’s first 10 games this season, starting seven. He averaged 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds a game in those 10 games.

Pettinella is from Webster, N.Y., and is in his first season with the Cavaliers after transferring to Virginia.
