Albright, Caponi, Jones Advance to Quarters at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Virginia wrestlers Eric Albright, Brent Jones and Rocco Caponi each advanced to the quarterfinals to lead the Cavaliers at the Southern Scuffle Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum War Memorial Auditorium. Virginia sits in 15th place with 27 team points. Five Cavaliers are still alive in the tournament, with action resuming at 9 a.m. Saturday.
No. 2 Minnesota collected a total of 59.5 points and holds a small lead over Edinboro, who sits in second with 53.5 total points. Cornell (52), top-ranked Missouri (50.5) and California State – Bakersfield (42.5) round out the top five.
Albright, who is seeded sixth in the tournament at 133 pounds, claimed a 3-2 decision over George Mason’s Will Powars before pinning Cal-State Bakerfield’s John Cardenas at 4:20. Albright won by major decision over Boise State’s Levi Jones, 11-3, to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face No. 3 seed Drew Headlee of Pittsburgh.
Caponi, who has the No. 4 seed at 184 pounds, defeated Navy’s Matt Parsons, 3-2, and then shut out The Citadel’s John Dickerson, 7-0. He shut out UNC Greeensboro’s Kane Smith, 10-0, for a major decision to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face No. 5 seed Eric Chine of Kent State.
Jones, wrestling unattached for the Cavaliers at 197 pounds, decisioned Lock Haven’s Jeremie Cook, 14-9. Jones then pinned Cornell’s Carl Landers in 3:56. He will now face Missouri’s Max Askren, the top seed at 197 pounds, in the quarterfinals
Ross Gitomer and Kellon Balum are both still alive for the Cavaliers after advancing through the consolation brackets.
Gitomer at 125 pounds opened the tournament with a 4-2 sudden victory win over Ohio’s Seth Morton. He fell to Lock Haven’s Obenson Blanc, 7-1 in the round of 32. Gitomer then posted a 15-5 major decision over The Citadel’s Tyler Sim. Gitomer then majored Campbell’s Richie Apolinar, 18-6 before knocking off UNCG’s Jeff Hedges, 4-2. He faces Edinboro’s Eric Morrill in his first match Saturday.
Balum won in the round of 32 by technical fall, 17-2 over The Citadel’s Matt Bullwinkel. No. 5 seed Mike Keefe defeated Balum, 14-5, in the round of 16. Balum bounced back to earn a 10-2 major decision over Duke’s Wes Kuser to advance to face Kent State’s Drew Lashaway in his first match Saturday.
