Cavalier Women's Tennis Sweeps Pair of Matches

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of wins Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club. The No. 27 Cavaliers topped No. 60 Marshall 5-2 before dispatching of Davidson 7-0 in the nightcap.

Against Marshall, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The team of Kristen McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, upsetting the No. 35 ranked team of Kellie Schmitt and Lynzee Kever. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) won at No. 2 doubles, defeating Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashelkina 8-2.

In singles, the Cavaliers posted four straight set wins over the Thundering Herd to secure the win. Stevens topped Kever 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Kashelkina 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) topped No. 94 Thaddea Lock 6-2, 6-0, and Hammond defeated Jeanne Schwartz 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Against the Wildcats, the Cavaliers swept the doubles with McVitty and Stevens winning at No. 1, Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) winning at No. 2, and Yahner and Pereira winning at No. 3.

Virginia swept the six singles matches, all in straight sets. Stevens, Yahner, Pereira, and Hammond each won their second match of day, while McVitty and Rales also recorded wins.

The Cavaliers continue their season-opening road trip next weekend as they visit Middle Tennessee on Friday and No. 30 Tennessee on Sunday.
