CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (10-1) defeated No. 19 Boise State (8-4) tonight, 7-0, at the Boyd Tinsley Courts. The Cavaliers finished the weekend undefeated against a pair of top-20 opponents to close out the bulk of their non-conference schedule.The Cavaliers rallied to win the doubles point to start the match. At the No. 3 position, Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) fell to Eric Roberton and Blake Boswell, 8-3. Rallying from down a break, the team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) downed Steve Robertson and Clancy Shields, 8-6. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers by defeating Piotr Dilaj and Luke Shields, 8-4, at the No. 1 position.
Virginia carried their doubles momentum over to the singles matches as they swept every match. At the No. 3 position, Inglot capped off an undefeated weekend by defeating Dilaj, 6-1, 6-2. Miklo exacted some revenge on Roberton by downing the Bronco, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 5 position. At No. 4, Barrick rebounded from a tough loss on Friday to defeat Boswell, 6-4, 6-2. In his first collegiate action this season, Nick Meros (Tallahassee, Fla.) came away with a victory over Brent Werbeck, 7-6(7), 6-2. No. 22 Huey downed Clancy Shields at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 7-6(2), to finalize a perfect weekend. In the only singles match to go beyond two sets, Devvarman defeated Luke Shields in a superbreaker, 6-0, 5-7, 10-6.
The Cavaliers’ next match is a home doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb 28 against Old Dominion at 11 a.m., followed by the opening of their ACC schedule against Maryland at 6 p.m.
