Virginia Defeats Richmond 13-5

The Virginia women’s lacrosse team held visiting Richmond to 15 shots, including only five in the first half, and defeated the Spiders 13-5 tonight in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (2-0) were led offensively by Blair Weymouth’s three goals and two assists, with all three goals coming in the decisive first half. Kate Breslin notched her second consecutive hat trick, while at the other end of the field the Virginia defense did not allow the Spiders (2-2) and appreciable time in the arc. The Cavaliers dominated the draws, winning 12 of the 20 in the game, including three by Ashley McCulloch.
After Richmond tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh minute, the Cavaliers answered with a Jess Wasilewski draw control and a dump to Kaitlin Swagart, who scored 12 seconds after the Richmond goal to ignite a 5-1 run to close out the half. Weymouth had two goals and an assist in that span, and Kendall McBrearty had two saves to hold the Spiders off the board. The only Richmond goal in the run was a ball that was checked out of a defender’s stick into the Virginia cage.
“We were able to get into a rhythm and flow,” said Virginia head coach Julie Myers.
Ashley McCulloch opened the second half with a pair of goals two minutes apart to stretch the lead to 8-2 before UR’s Allison Furstenberg ended the 29-minute scoring drought with an 8-meter goal at the 17:24 mark of the second half. Once again the Cavaliers won the draw, thanks to Brittany Kalkstein, and Breslin converted a Wasilewski pass off an 8-meter setup to score 27 seconds after Richmond.
Megan Havrilla sandwiched a goal and an assist around Furstenburg’s second goal of the game late in the second half, and Kalkstein scored off an assist from Weymouth in the final minute for the final score of 13-5.
Kalkstein led the Cavaliers with three ground balls and she added a caused turnover and two draw controls. For the second consecutive game McCulloch lead the team in draw controls. McBrearty finished with three saves, while her counterpart Jackie Swansburg had 13 saves to lead the Spiders.
“Our defense did a great job of coming together and playing as a solid unit,” said captain Jessy Morgan. “That in turn gave our offense a chance to get a lot of nice looks with the ball.”
Virginia returns to action on Saturday (March 3) as the Cavaliers travel to Syracuse to face the Orange. The draw is set for 1 p.m.
