Men's Tennis Remains Unbeaten in ACC Play with 5-2 Win Over Clemson

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team remained unbeaten in the ACC with a 5-2 victory over No. 26 Clemson Friday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (18-3, 6-0 ACC) extended their home winning streak to 12 matches and their ACC winning streak to eight matches.
Virginia took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Second ranked Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) got Virginia going with an 8-4 win over No. 24 Ryan Young and Clement Reix at the No. 1 position. The No. 49 ranked duo of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) clinched the opening point with their 8-5 win over Jarmaine Jenkins and Kevin Fleck at No. 2 doubles. Clemson took the final doubles match on the courts as Rok Bizjak and Carlos Alvarez downed Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the score quickly jumped to 3-0 in favor of the Cavaliers with wins at the top two positions. No. 22 Huey downed Jenkins 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and second ranked Devvarman topped Reix 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Barrick clinched the dual match for Virginia as he completed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alvarez at the No. 5 position. The Tigers (22-7, 2-4 ACC) got on the board with Young’s 6-4, 6-0 victory over Inglot at No. 3 singles. Singer made the score 5-1 in favor of Virginia with his 6-1, 6-3 win over Fleck at No. 6 singles. In the final match on the courts, Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) rallied from down 6-1, 4-1 to force a third-set superbreaker, but fell to Bizjak 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 at No. 4 singles.
Virginia will conclude its three-match homestand on Sunday, April 1, as the Cavaliers host Georgia Tech at the Snyder Tennis Center. Match time is 11 a.m.
