CARY, N.C. – The Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 ACC Tournament with a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over No. 35 Miami Friday morning at the Cary Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 24-3 on the season, and will meet Wake Forest on Saturday.

“I thought the guys came out and played well with a lot of energy,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland, “The doubles point was tight, but we were able to prevail. Then in singles, we did a good job of staying focused from the start to the end. Miami is a great team and I thought they competed hard. Today was a good way to start off the tournament for us and we look forward to another tough match against Wake tomorrow.”

In doubles, the Cavaliers took an early edge as Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) topped Vivek Subramanian and Daniel Vallverdu 8-5 at the No. 2 position. Miami answered at No. 3 doubles, as the team of J.C. Whitner and Hector Nieto defeated Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) 8-6. The opening point came down to No. 1 doubles, where a battle of two of the nation’s top three teams took place. No. 2 Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) rallied from down 3-0 to serve for the match at 7-6 against No. 3 Luigi D’Agord and Josh Cohen. However, the Hurricane duo broke serve to draw even, 7-7. Huey and Devvarman broke right back and then served out to win 9-7 and give UVa a 1-0 lead.

In singles, the score quickly went to 2-0 as Angelinos needed less than an hour to dispose of Barnabas Carrega 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Miami made the score 2-1 as Cohen defeated Inglot 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. In a battle of top ten players at No. 1 singles, No. 2 Devvarman cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 10 D’Agord, the ACC Player of the Year. Barrick clinched the match at No. 5 singles, as he completed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nieto. Huey and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) were both ahead in their matches when they were abandoned.
