CHARLOTTESVILLE – Rob Skinner, director of the Homer Rice Center for Sports Performance at Georgia Tech the last four years, has been named director of sports nutrition for the Virginia athletics department. Virginia Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver announced Skinner’s appointment on Friday (Aug. 31).

Skinner has 10 years of sports nutrition experience at Georgia Tech. Prior to being named director of the Homer Rice Center for Sports Performance he was Tech’s director of sports nutrition for six years. As director of The Homer Rice Center for Sports Performance, Skinner had responsibility for the individual sports performance labs including sports nutrition, sports physiology, sports psychology, sports vision and biomechanics. He worked daily with student-athletes from 17 sports.

At Virginia, Skinner will be responsible for individual consultation with student-athletes, including providing comprehensive services for individuals with at-risk behaviors. He will serve as the department’s expert in sports nutrition, promoting nutrition services and developing a comprehensive clinical service to student-athletes.

“We are very fortunate to have Rob Skinner join our staff,” Oliver said. “When we first envisioned a dining hall for student-athletes we knew this position would be critical to positioning daily nutrition as an important tool for student-athletes and their success. Rob’s credentials and experience speak for themselves. His work will be at the forefront of helping the department reach its ten-year goals.

“I would also like to thank the search committee for its excellent work during this process.”

Skinner has also served as a sports nutrition consultant to the Atlanta Falcons since April of this year and as a part-time nutrition instructor at Georgia State since August of 2004.

The Georgia Dietetic Association named him the Young Dietitian of the Year in 2001.

“I am excited about the opportunity to join the athletics department at the University of Virginia,” Skinner said. “The athletics department at Virginia has a clear sense of mission and is dedicated to assisting student-athletes achieve their best academically and athletically. Nutrition for performance is a tool that student-athletes can use to reach their potential at the highest competitive levels.”

Skinner is a registered dietitian with the American Dietetic Association (ADA), as well as a member of The Sports and Cardiovascular Nutritionists (SCAN), a practice group of the ADA. He also holds certifications with the American Dietetic Association as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Instructor (H/FI).

He earned a bachelor’s degree in education and recreation from Georgia in 1991, a bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Georgia State in 1997 and a master’s degree from Georgia State in exercise science with a concentration in exercise physiology in 2001.

Skinner assumes his responsibilities at Virginia on Sept. 17.
