NORFOLK – Despite holding a 17-2 advantage in short corners, the Virginia field hockey team fell 3-1 to No. 6 Old Dominion today in Norfolk. The No. 8 Cavaliers (1-2) held the Lady Monarchs (1-2) to only four shots in the contest and allowed only one short corner in each half, but ODU was able to convert on one of those to tie the game. Traci Ragukas tallied a goal in her third consecutive game to lead Virginia offensively.

The Cavaliers were able to generate a shot off of the centre pass as Fenna Breitbarth attacked up the middle of the pitch and passed the ball off to Virginia Beach native Kaitlyn Hiltz, whose attempt was saved in the opening 15 seconds of the game. Fifteen minutes later Breitbarth stole the ball at the 25, attacked the circle, and drew Virginia’s sixth short corner of the contest. On the restart, the variation went to Sara Confer on the left, who passed the ball to Ragukas on the post on the right, and Ragukas scored at 14:39 for the 1-0 lead.

Old Dominion drew its first corner in the 30th minute of play, and Katelyn Smither connected off an insert from Jo Ann van Aswegen and a stop by Titia Beek. Minutes later Beek scored an unassisted goal to give ODU a 2-1 lead at the break. The Cavaliers led in short corners (8-1) and shots (10-4).

Nine minutes into the second half Beek scored another unassisted goal to put ODU up 3-1. The Cavaliers drew nine corners in the second half but were not able to net the equalizer.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8 as they take on New Hampshire in Burlington, Vt. Game time against the Wildcats is 2 p.m.
