Joe Koshansky Makes MLB Debut for Colorado Rockies

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Former Virginia baseball player Joe Koshansky made his Major League Baseball debut for the Colorado Rockies Saturday night at Arizona. Koshansky earned a September call-up Saturday and pinch-hit that night in the ninth inning for pitcher Matt Herges and grounded out.

The 25-year-old Koshansky, a first baseman, had a banner season for Triple-A Colorado Springs, hitting .295 (147-for-498) with 30 doubles, 21 home runs, 99 RBI and 79 runs scored in 136 games for the Sky Sox. He led the team in hits, home runs, RBI, runs scored and walks (67). His 99 RBI ranked as the fifth-most in the Pacific Coast League.

He was ranked as the Rockies’ 13th-best prospect by Baseball America prior to this season. Selected by Colorado in the sixth round of the 2004 Draft, Koshansky was named the Rockies’ Minor League Player of the Year last season after hitting .284 with 31 home runs and a league-high 109 RBI.

Koshansky is the second former Virginia player to make his Major League debut this season. Mark Reynolds made his big-league debut in May for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
