CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia baseball team lifted the curtain on its 2007-08 season Friday night with a 9-1 exhibition win over the Ontario Blue Jays at Davenport Field. In the 16-inning contest, Virginia pitchers gave up just three hits.

The new-look Cavaliers had the opportunity to get their 16 new players, including 14 freshmen, into a game action setting. Freshman Tyler Biddix (Richmond, Va.) had four hits and four RBI, while Jarrett Parker (Stafford, Va.) added three hits to lead the Virginia 18-hit attack. The Cavaliers used nine pitchers, including all seven of the freshman pitchers.

Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. The Cavaliers tacked on three runs in the sixth inning on a Biddix single, a passed ball and a Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) single.

The Cavaliers added a run in the ninth on a Parker single, then posted three more in the 11th inning on another run-scoring single by Parker and a two-run triple by Biddix.

The Blue Jays broke into the scoring column in the 15th inning on a Adam Velocci bases-loaded walk, but the Cavaliers responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI infield single by Biddix.

Virginia will continue its fall practice over the next few weeks, with the fall campaign culminating in the Orange and Blue World Series in mid-October. The seven-game series kicks off at 6 p.m. Oct. 9.
