RALEIGH, N.C. The No. 3 ranked Virginia men’s soccer team opened ACC play Saturday with a 2-2 tie against NC State at Method Road Stadium. Chase Neinken (Roswell, Ga.) and Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) scored for the Cavaliers, who are now 5-1-1 this season.

“It was around 95 degrees at game time and the heat was a factor for both teams today,” said head coach George Gelnovatch. “The conditions made having played on Wednesday an even a bigger factor for us. In the second half, I felt like we played much better, and our passing and execution improved. We had chances to get the winner, but couldn’t get one to go in.”

The Wolfpack (3-2-2, 0-1-1 ACC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of play. El Hadj Cisse scored his second of the season off assists from Jorge Mora and Alan Shanchez. NC State held that 1-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Cavaliers (5-1-1, 0-0-1 ACC) scored a pair of goals to take the lead. In the 58th minute, Neinken recorded his first career goal on assists from Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas) and Ross LaBauex (Chicago, Ill.) to tie the game. Four minutes later, Reyering scored on a free kick to give Virginia the 2-1 lead. It was Reyering’s team-leading fifth goal of the season. NC State answered in the 69th minute as Ernesto Di Laudo scored on assists by Shanchez and Hugh Cronin.

The teams each had 16 shots in the game, while the Wolfpack had a 8-6 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made five saves for Virginia, while Christopher Widman made three for NC State.

Virginia will return home on Tuesday to host Mount St. Mary’s. Game time at Klckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
