Softball Plays Longwood in Sunday Exhibition

The Virginia softball team will play an exhibition game with Longwood at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Park. Though it’s an exhibition, it will be the first organized competition for the 2008 Cavaliers and first-year head coach Eileen Schmidt.

“We have not been practicing very long so we really just want to see the basics,” Schmidt said. “It will be a blue collar weekend. We plan to use a lot of players in a lot of different positions to find the right fit for the team. There will be plenty of playing time to go around.

This weekend really is about getting out on the field, getting the jitters out, and listing out the things we need to continue to emphasize during the week.”

Virginia returns 10 letterwinners from the ’07 squad and welcomes seven first years, as well as transfer Carly Winger from Cal-Berkeley.
