CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. USA Swimming has announced that Virginia swimmers Ryan Hurley and Pat Mellors have been named to the United States National Team. The national team is comprised of athletes who have posted the top six times in Olympic events swum in the finals from the World Championships, Pan American Games, World University Games and the U.S. National Championships.

Mellors, the 2007 ACC Swimmer of the Year, is ranked third in the 400 IM behind world record holders Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Mellors’ record-setting time of 4:12.94 at the World University Games in Thailand last August earned him a spot on the team.

Hurley will be competing in the 200 breaststroke as the fourth-ranked swimmer behind world record holder and Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen. Hurley, like Mellors, qualified at the World University Games, finishing the event in 2:13.24 to earn the silver medal.

Hurley and Mellors will participate along with many other Cavalier teammates in the U.S. Olympic Trials for a chance to make the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Beijing, China. The trials will be held June 29 through July 6 in Omaha, Neb.
