Louisville The Virginia field hockey team held a 1-0 lead late into the game, but No. 14/17 Louisville scored on a short corner late in regulation and then again in the opening minute of the extra session to defeat No. 15/19 Virginia 2-1 today in Louisville. Jamie Mulhare tallied the goal for the Cavaliers (7-6), while Allison Maffitt scored both goals for the Cards (9-5) off assists from Nicole Youman.

Virginia jumped on the board late in the first half as Shelley Edmonds dribbled the ball out of the defensive circle and sent it up to Abby Taylor, who tipped the ball forward to Traci Ragukas. Ragukas sent a long ball that was tipped over the midfield by a Cardinal; Jamie Mulhare was over the midfield stripe, collected it, and attacked the circle with a trailing defender. Louisville’s Marie-Claire Heller came out to challenge Mulhare, but Mulhare pulled right and slotted the ball into the open net to put Virginia up 1-0 at 30:36. The Cavaliers led with this score at the break.

In the second half the Cavaliers drew three corners to the Cards’ two, but Louisville was able to capitalize on their final short of the half as Maffit redirected a Youman pass to the nets for the equalizer at 63:18. Virginia had a final corner in the closing minutes but Heller saved the direct shot.

In the extra session, Louisville drew a short corner and on the direction insertion to Youman on the left, Maffitt tipped the pass into the cage, ending the game at 71:55.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday (Oct 10) as Virginia hosts in-state rival Radford. Game time against the Highlanders is 6 p.m.
