CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Team Orange drew first blood Tuesday night in the Virginia baseball team’s annual Orange and Blue World Series, earning a 3-0 win over the Blue Team in Game 1 at Davenport Field. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored, while Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) and Robert Morey (Virginia Beach, Va.) combined on a four-hit shutout.

Thompson and Blue Team starter Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) battled pitch for pitch for four innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. The Orange team broke through in the sixth inning with a run against Andrew Carraway (Marietta, Ga.), as Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) hit a grounder to score Adams.

The Orange team tacked on two runs in the seventh inning. Jake Cowan (Roswell, Ga.) scored on a Dan Grovatt (Tabernacle, N.J.) wild pitch to push the Orange lead to 2-0, and Adams hit an opposite-field home run to right field to provide the final margin of 3-0.

The seven-game World Series continues at 4 p.m. Thursday. All games are free of charge and open to the public.
